Mac OS history

Mac OS was released in 1984 along with Apple's first Macintosh personal computer. The ideas embodied in the first version of the Mac OS system came from Xerox.

Slide 5

By combining existing ideas and their own ideas, Apple's programmers created Mac OS, the first graphics operating system available to all.

Slide 6

Already then, all of us used the familiar window interface, file folders, and for the first time a manipulator called a computer mouse was used in it, capable of moving the cursor over the entire area of the screen. This concept was quite consistent with the main idea of Apple itself, which proposed to create a computer accessible to everyone, both in price and in technical terms.

Slide 7

Evolution of Mac OS X

The operating system of AppleMac OS X is currently presented in two versions: a version for workstations and laptops, as well as a version for a server, which is necessary for organizing the operation of a local network of an enterprise.

Slide 21

Pros and cons of Mac OS

The main reason for the small percentage of people who chose computers from Apple for work is primarily the price, and secondly the closed nature of MacOS. The company's management policy is aimed at ensuring that the MacOS operating system can only be installed on their own computers, so those who decide to enjoy all the advantages of Mac OS are simply obliged to buy a Macintosh.

Slide 22

But every advantage and every drawback in this case is absolutely conditional, since here it is necessary to take into account which side to look at this or that problem. The price is the main disadvantage of computers from Apple, since they are not available to the broad masses of the population, and do not at all cost the budget version. The range of Macintosh computers offered in the store is rather poor, each direction is represented by only two or three copies. Moreover, all computers are produced only in finished form, and for those who are used to assembling a computer for themselves, this option will not work at all. But on the other hand, having come to the store, you do not have to think long about which Macintosh to choose, while the quality of each of them will be at the highest level.

Slide 23

At the same time, Mac OS was created specifically for Macintosh computers, which allows you to use the capabilities of hardware 100 percent, and not overpay money for new items that are not known when and with what it will be possible to evaluate. In addition, the set with Mac OS includes a set of really useful programs that allow you to organize the entire workflow of a modern person. Add to this free service at any Apple branded store,

Slide 24

Another unpleasant problem is the closed nature of Mac OS, which primarily affects the lack of software for it from third-party developers. Until now, some important software products written for Macintosh do not exist, and gamblers will not be able to roam, since games are developed primarily for Windows, and then for Mac OS, besides, you will not find some toys at all. But time does not stand still, and organizations appear that are engaged in the development of software products for Mac OS, and well-known software developers are interested in making their product work on Macintosh computers.

Slide 25

The debate about which is better can be continued indefinitely, but if you ask those who decided and bought a Macintosh computer, whether they agree to change it to another, most likely you will receive a negative answer. Macintosh users love their computers. This can be explained by the fact that Apple's management creates its products primarily for people. Their main strategy is beauty and convenience. In addition, all their developments are in step with the times, and even a little ahead of it. When buying a Macintosh computer with Mac OS you can be sure that it will not become obsolete in six months, but will be relevant for a long time.

Sooner or later, we all do presentations. What to choose so as not to overwhelm the meeting and not embarrass yourself?

The question is, in fact, rhetorical

Why the question is relevant again

This summer, Microsoft finally has a completely new "office" - Office 2016... It finally fixed the critical flaws of the old version (2011), which until now had been suffered by Mac owners who were not ready to switch to Windows.

Office 2016... But what's going on with the infamous part of the package - PowerPoint? The program, despite its widespread distribution, ten years ago became a household name for buggy and ugly presentations.

How is it now, in new version of "office" for Mac? What is the global difference between the most recent PowerPoint and Apple's brainchild of similar functionality, Keynote?

Why PowerPoint and not Keynote

1. Universal availability

The first, key, most important point. Let's face it: the vast majority of people use Office and Powerpoint in particular. By creating a file within its framework, you can be sure: it will be opened on any computer, and in response you will not receive a letter with a logical question: "Something the file does not open, will you help?"

Powerpoint presentations created in the new Office 2016 suite can be opened in all modern (and not so) versions of Office, as well as in the same Keynote. In the latter case, there is a chance Keynote will "break" graphics, fonts, or conversion transitions - BUT. File something will open.

In the world, only 1 in 10 computers have OS X on board. At best, a third of them have Keynote installed. I think the hint is clear. By saving your presentation in .pptx format, you are guaranteed to be able to open it on 10 out of 10 computers if you have office software on board. No surprises.

There are other situations when a file in the format .keynote can create intractable problems. Let's say you are giving a presentation in enemy / partner territory. A Windows laptop is connected to the projector. You boldly approach, stick a flash drive with a presentation there and realize that it will be fun now. It will not open and that's it.

Therefore, if you give presentations to the accompaniment of slides, exchange presentations with others by mail and from a flash drive, and in general you carry out activities outside the cozy walls of your home office, you cannot do without Powerpoint. Or, of course, you can carry a MacBook with you and show presentations from it, we are not looking for easy ways :)

2. Predictability of work and continuity

The first version of Powerpoint was released in 1990 as part of the Microsoft Office suite. 25 years have passed since then.

For 25 years this application has been improving, acquiring new functions and adapting to the changing needs of its users - mainly to the tasks of the corporate audience. Accordingly, most “confident PC users” have at least basic Powerpoint skills.

This is the experience that is passed from major release to release. What worked 10 years ago in Office 2003 works the same way without problems in Office 2016. How to create slides, hang transitions on them, set up animations (please don't), put hyperlinks - all this was taught (or learned) a lot more years ago, and muscle memory cannot be fooled.

By deploying the Office suite in your office, you can be sure that all employees with an IQ above 50 will understand it. The same applies to edits in the presentation: if you prepare slides for the whole department, you can safely send the file back and forth and know that Vasya will figure out through two tables where to click to achieve the desired result.

One day I needed to ask by phone to make edits to a presentation made in .keynote. Fortunately, the business coach also had a Mac. But the slides themselves were done for him by someone else ... and it was a terrible, difficult moment in my life, at the end of which I lost a lot of cool to both Keynote and iWork in general. The logic of work is in many ways different, and people who are accustomed to the office cannot be easily retrained.

3. Great functionality

Those same 25 years of life have left their mark on Powerpoint. It is one of the most powerful presentation apps out there today. It is equally convenient to do both school slides (there is such a practice, and it was before), as well as serious business reports or accompanying slides.

Many stereotypes about the functionality and stability of Powerpoint, including the legendary and “fond” clipart, are rooted in the distant past. Office 2016 and Powerpoint in its composition are practically nothing not inferior to Keynote in terms of visual "goodies" and the subjective beauty of the resulting slides. The templates built into the new version can be safely taken as a basis, and not grab your head and wash your eyes with soap, like 15 years ago.

There are many internal and external innovations, some of which are specifically designed for users with a basic level of knowledge. For example, in the new Powerpoint, content placement zones are automatically suggested - when the block moves, they are displayed in pink lines - this allows you to quickly and easily create easily perceived presentations, where all elements are placed at the same level and distance from each other (the scourge of old Powerpoint presentations ).

Keynote in terms of functionality has always seemed more convenient and "faster" than Powerpoint. Fresh version of "office" sharply catching up with usability finally revealing its strengths to the user. It now takes the same amount of time to create the same presentation in both applications. And that's great. Finally, Microsoft remembered that the “macovods” are people too;)

4. Backward compatibility with Office

As part of the Office suite, Powerpoint deeply integrated with all applications - Excel, Word, OneNote, and so on. This is critical for those who entrust office tasks entirely to the brainchild of Microsoft. And such, as you know, the absolute majority.

For example, you made a table in Excel that you want to show on a slide in your presentation. Its embedding is a matter of literally two clicks. The data in the plate can be changed in the original file without closing the slide, and the information will be promptly updated. A graph can be easily created from the same table. Sticky notes from OneNote can be placed in whole or in part, with convenient formatting and editing tools right inside the presentation. Etc.

In short, Powerpoint operates in the Office ecosystem where everything works in synergy and complements each other. If you use Word and Excel, it doesn't make much sense to run to Keynote and try to stick a fresh income statement there - unless you get a dose of masochism, but we value our time, right?

5. New version: fast and convenient

The main innovation of the new version of Powerpoint is simply the new Office itself. In the fresh version, Microsoft has done a great job of trying to clean up in the Mac version of the package. And the result, judging by the reviews and my own impressions, turned out to be great.

The interface from the 2011 version has undergone global changes, and now almost completely repeats that in the conventionally standard Office 2003 for Windows. Many things are striking, especially for experienced users: for example, the dashboard displays fewer ambiguous icons, and if desired, a menu of advanced commands opens, which does not interfere with work in other cases. The color scheme has become "calm", there is no carnival of variegated glossy keys.

Typography, tool layout, responsiveness and overall performance are noticeably superior to those of the previous version of "office" for OS X. If you still put up with the 11th version, it's time to update and forget about that as a bad dream.

Well, it's not fair, but what about Keynote?

Let's be very frank. Keynote- good program. Probably the most successful of all iWork applications to date. With its help, you can make cute presentations in a minimalist style, without being overwhelmed by trifles.

But these presentations are good only within the Apple ecosystem... At home, in the office on your computer, between two poppy growers - everything is gorgeous and cool. As soon as this presentation goes into the huge and evil world of business, problems begin.

Keynote - for myself, Powerpoint - for business... So it was, and so it will be. Unless the new Powerpoint has finally tried to enter iWork territory in terms of convenience - with decent results. The new version is no more difficult to work with than Keynote. Worth a try.

How to try the new Office

Two option.

1. You can also try is free.

You come in by this link, download and try for 30 days. The package is fully functional, there are no restrictions. If you like it, you will not like it - you decide for yourself.

2. You can just

Which includes a set of ready-made slide layouts. Each layout includes image and text placeholders that are styled like headings and body content. To add your own content, replace these placeholders with your own content.

Presentation creation

To open Keynote, click the Keynote icon in the Dock, Launchpad, or Applications folder.

In the theme chooser, find the type of presentation you want to create, and then double-click the theme to open it.

To change the layout of the first slide, click the Change Master button in the sidebar on the right, then choose a different layout.

Each slide layout is a master slide used as a basis for adding your own content.

To add your own content to the presentation, do one of the following:

If iCloud Drive is set up on your computer, Keynote will save documents to it by default. You can change the presentation name or storage location at any time.

To play the presentation, click in the toolbar, then press the arrow keys to navigate between slides.

Press Esc (Escape) to end the presentation. For other ways to show your presentation, see Play a presentation on Mac.

To close the presentation when finished, click the red close button in the upper left corner of the window.

Keynote saves your changes automatically so you don't lose your work.

Advice. In Keynote preferences, you can set a theme to apply to all new presentations.

Create new presentations with a specific theme

You can set a preference in Keynote to always open a new presentation in a specific topic, instead of displaying a topic selection window.

Choose Keynote> Preferences (from the Keynote menu at the top of your screen).

Click General at the top of the Preferences window, then select the Use Theme button.

After the words "Use Theme", the name of the currently selected theme is displayed.

Click the Change Theme button, select a theme, then click Select.

To close the preferences window, click the red close button in the upper left corner of the window.

After specifying this setting, you can still open a new presentation with a different theme. Hold down the Option key and choose File> New From Themes Selector (from the File menu at the top of your screen).
