Rector of the EMAS Business School.

Today, the Russian business community is actively thinking about growth drivers. Familiar to us in last years the drivers of economic growth in general, and of specific enterprises in particular, have already been exhausted. Oil revenues no longer provide the support necessary for economic growth, the devaluation of the ruble and spiraling inflation lead to a serious decrease in the real incomes of citizens. Western sanctions and our country's membership in the WTO turn this trend into a long-term trend. For domestic small and medium-sized businesses, this means only one thing - the fat years have passed, and a decade of a depressed market awaits us.

Enterprise growth factors

Each enterprise in such a situation may have 3 possible growth factors:

First factor Is an administrative resource, close ties with the authorities. It has been used in Russia for many years and therefore it is practically impossible to say that it will give something more than it has already brought to this or that enterprise. Yes, you can sit on budget flows and make money out of it, but the problem is that these flows are drying up before our eyes. There is less and less money in the budget every year. And it will only get worse in the future. And this applies to both the federation and the regions. Therefore, this growth factor for the majority of enterprises has been exhausted; at best, it will be possible to maintain the same volumes.

Second factor - growth due to entering new markets. But most of the markets are already occupied by other businesses. Therefore, this factor cannot be realized without the presence of the third factor.

The third factor - increased efficiency business, competitiveness, modernization and debugging of business processes of enterprises. This is a whole range of works that must be carried out by enterprise managers. Their goal is to squeeze more profit from each ruble invested in business, to become more effective than a competitor. This is an increase in profitability, labor productivity, etc. projects based on improving the company's business processes. It is this growth factor that is most realistic for small and medium-sized businesses today and over the next decade. Its prospects are explained by the fact that most companies have not yet been engaged in the creation of effective business processes at the proper level and, therefore, significant improvements are still possible here. It's no secret that the efficiency of the average Russian company lower than its European or American counterpart.

Any project to improve the efficiency of a company's business processes is based on the knowledge possessed by its managers. If you do not know how to modernize this or that business process, you will not be able to do it. This raises the question of obtaining a high-quality business education, because universities do not teach such things - institutions higher education solve completely different problems.

The most suitable programs for managers to learn in order to ensure the growth of their enterprises through improving the efficiency of business processes are MBA programs. The image of these programs in Russia is somewhat spoiled by the poor-quality work of a number of educational institutions, but this does not negate the fact itself - only training on a good MBA program gives a manager necessary knowledge to improve your company and your own career growth.

The world distinguishes 4 types of programs ... They differ significantly from each other and are intended for completely different audiences. The wrong choice of the wrong format leads to the fact that the person does not get the desired result and is disappointed ... This is the reason for many complaints about the quality of programs.

Types of MBA programs

The first kind of program- is it simple or an MBA with a specialization in some topic. Many believe that this is the only one existing species programs of the MBA format. But this is not the case. The content of these programs is certain theoretical knowledge with relatively little practical training. At the same time, in the programs of most schools, practical training is carried out on educational examples (the so-called "cases", the actual training of the material on the basis of the enterprises of the program participants, as a rule, is not carried out. The exception is the Implementation MBA , which will be discussed below.

The target audience of MBA all over the world are young people who have recently (2 - 5 years ago) graduated from universities. These people occupy either junior management positions or are middle managers. They do not have top-level management experience and do not have the authority to make significant business decisions and make major changes in the work of their enterprises. The described audience specificity explains the content of these programs.

The purpose of MBA programs is to provide participants with a good theoretical foundation for future growth. As a rule, deep practical training for the immediate solution of tasks that are significant for the enterprise where the student works is not carried out. At the same time, the low practicality of such programs is not their disadvantage. It's just that their audience is not ready for a different approach - they have neither significant management experience nor decision-making authority. Such people need exactly the theory so that when they take a serious managerial position, they can make intelligent decisions. Senior executives, as a rule, should not be trained in such programs. MBA programs were not originally intended for them. But for a young manager, these programs are a great choice.

The second type of program- this (or Executive MBA with specialization). This is a more prestigious and more practical type of program than an MBA. These are higher level programs. Around the world, such programs are intended for owners, senior executives and personnel reserve claiming the highest leadership position. These are already people with real management experience and the authority to immediately implement changes in the activities of their enterprises. There are no junior managers in such programs. For a business school, it is more difficult to conduct an Executive MBA program than an MBA, as it is a more practical program. In the right Executive MBA the studied material is worked out by the participants at their own enterprises rather than abstract case studies, and is often immediately implemented into work. Accordingly, the level of teachers should be higher, since the requirements of the program participants to them are very high. Therefore, only a small number of business schools offer Executive MBA, most offer the market only regular MBA. At the same time, unfortunately, there is a certain number of low-quality Executive MBAs on the market, which are essentially a tracing paper from ordinary MBAs - the requirement for deeper practicality and participants working on the studied material on their own rather than abstract examples is not observed. Such fakes are characteristic of those educational institutions who do not have a teaching staff that is competent enough to maintain the Executive MBA format, but at the same time strive to get their part of the market, bringing a low-quality product to it. This vicious practice, unfortunately, is practiced by a number of public and private business schools. Such fake Executive MBA diplomas are not listed among employers because low level the quality of teaching and its non-compliance with standards in such schools is well known and is elementarily established through the study of reviews on the Internet.

It is important to note that, like the MBA, a high-quality Executive MBA is an integral diploma program that obeys international requirements, and not an arbitrary set of different courses. But, unfortunately, under this brand they often give out some sort of hodgepodge of seminars and trainings. This is unacceptable and not correct.

The third type of program- it . This is the most prestigious type of MBA programs, ultra-premium. These are programs of the highest level ... Compared to the number of business schools that offer MBA and Executive MBA, the number of schools offering DBA is minimal. This is due to the fact that the requirements for the quality and depth of the DBA are even higher than those for the Executive MBA. As a rule, such programs are taught to owners or top managers (or those who are one step away from taking this position) with significant life and management experience. Accordingly, as in the case of the Executive MBA, DBA assumes full practical immersion in the issues of its enterprise, the absence of any abstract cases, etc. DBA, as a rule, is a longer program than the Executive MBA, as it involves even more deep dive... DBA, in terms of its prestige in business, is considered as a kind of analogue of the degree of Candidate or Doctor of Science (although it is not equated to them - these are different, in principle, not comparable degrees).

The fourth type of program-. This is the fastest, least expensive program, also known as Pre-MBA (pre-MBA). These programs are designed for junior-level professionals; in general, they cannot be considered an analogue of an MBA, let alone an Executive MBA or DBA. Those who choose these programs, more often than not, consider them as the first step towards the subsequent MBA, Executive MBA or DBA education. Moreover, according to international standards Mini-MBA programs are not recognized as full MBAs , only MBA, Executive MBA and DBA programs are considered as such. In other words, if you want to have a full-fledged MBA, but now you cannot afford it for one reason or another, consider getting a Mini-MBA as the first step towards your desired goal. This option is chosen by people who, due to their workload or for financial reasons, cannot afford to immediately enroll in full-fledged programs.

That being said, some business schools offering a full range of MBA programs, including EMAS, allow graduates of their Mini-MBA, if they wish, to complete missing courses and receive full-fledged MBA diplomas, without the need to complete this program in its entirety . A similar option happens with MBA → Executive MBA → DBA... This, however, is not possible in all schools, but only in those in which there is a high-level educational process and Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA are synchronized with each other. This is convenient for a person who plans to develop his education for a long time and wants in the future to be able to get a diploma of a higher level program without having to complete it in its entirety, re-taking and paying for the courses that he has already successfully completed and paid for earlier.

Demonstrate visually difference in depth of Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA programs can be exemplified by the graduation projects that the participants of these programs defend in EMAS.

  • - Graduation project "Basic elements of strategic management of a company (separate business unit) with a planning horizon of 3 - 5 years."
  • - Graduation project "Basic elements of strategic management of a company (separate business unit) with a planning horizon of 3 - 5 years."
  • - Graduation project "Development strategy of a company (a separate business unit) with a planning horizon of 3 - 5 years (for a key product group)".
  • - Graduation project "Development strategy of a company (a separate business unit) with a planning horizon of 3 - 5 years (comprehensive - for all product groups)".

Academic or Implementation MBA?

In addition to differences in the content of Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA, there is a significant difference in the format of the programs, as well as the nature of the schools that run them. Each of them can be either Academic or Implementation. Moreover, the overwhelming majority of programs in Russia are Academic, which is due to the fact that the overwhelming number of Russian business schools are subdivisions of universities, subordinate to their philosophy and largely use university approaches and teaching staff, i.e. are by nature academic institutions of education.

As part of the Academic Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA, participants are usually given courses that are considered compulsory in terms of some academic standard. The academic program is inherently a kind of continuation of higher education, which is often evident from its content. In such programs, it is easy to find courses on macroeconomics, management theory, etc. - i.e. courses that are not directly related to the practice of doing business, but they form a certain general educational basis for the participants.

Wherein within the framework of Academic programs there is no element of introducing the acquired knowledge into the activities / work of participants... - Quality control of the knowledge gained, most often, is carried out in the form of standard exams and, sometimes, in the form of solving control abstract cases. Moreover, the above is true not only for academic Mini-MBA or MBA, but also for Executive MBA and DBA, although the practical component in the latter is still somewhat higher (as required according to their format - see the description above). Academic business schools do not control the very fact and quality of implementation of the acquired knowledge by participants their programs, believing that this goes beyond educational process... Academic programs can be viewed as good choice for those who are not interested in the implementation of the acquired knowledge directly during or in a short time after study (for example, women who are in maternity leave; men who at the time of admission have not decided what they want in their future career, etc.).

There are significantly fewer implementation Mini-MBAs, MBAs, Executive MBAs and DBAs in Russia and around the world than Academic ones, since their implementation is much more difficult for a business school. With regard to Russia, it can be argued that of the leading federal business schools, such programs are offered by only 2 or 3 schools, the first of which is EMAS. Implementation programs, in contrast to Academic, contain a different philosophy, which is directly reflected in the content of the program and how it is carried out. In the Implementation MBA, there are practically no general theoretical academic courses (macroeconomics, theory of something, etc.). Instead, the emphasis is on providing participants with courses that have immediate practical and implementation value for the companies they work for or plan to work in the future.

  • Academic program - there will be a separate course on macroeconomics and / or economic theory, which is of a general educational nature.
  • , for example, in EMAS - course " Strategic management... Business modeling. Business analysis. Forecasting the market and the company. "The course is of a purely practical nature, the participants study macroeconomic issues inextricably linked with other issues that need to be known in a single complex to solve the most important practical business problem - Creation of an effective business model and forecasting system for the dynamics of target markets.

Similar examples are visible with the naked eye and when comparing other courses. - The content of Academic programs, as a rule, is of a general educational nature at the time. as the content of Implementation - of an applied nature with the aim of direct implementation into practical activities participant.

Besides the content, significant difference between Implementation and Academic Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA is also how the business school monitors the quality of knowledge of the participants ... As mentioned above, Academic Business Schools use standard exams as a control tool in their programs (we are talking about high-quality business schools, there may not be any substandard exams at all ...). Implementation business schools in addition to passing exams require their listeners to carry out real implementation projects in the practice of their real enterprises ... That is, they require the Implementation of the acquired knowledge - they control how specifically the program participant will implement the knowledge that he received during his studies. Practice shows that from the point of view of quality control of participants' knowledge, the Implementation approach allows you to achieve better results than the Academic one - starting to do an implementation project at the request of the school, the participant will inevitably face many questions that he missed during the course and that could not be checked during the exam. However, this advantage in the quality of knowledge has another side. - It is more difficult to study in Implementation programs than in Academic programs, and this fact should be taken into account when choosing. So, for example, within the Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA in EMAS, participants carry out from 10 to 20 implementation projects "on their own", each project is 50% for the corresponding course (the remaining 50% is an exam in the course). Choosing an implementation MBA, you need to be prepared for the fact that study will require a serious attitude - you will have to do a lot of real implementation projects.

So which MBA should you choose?

Summarizing what has been said about the Academic and Implementation Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA, we can state the following:

  • Academic programs are recommended for those who are looking for more theoretical knowledge and does not want immediate implementation, nor is he willing to spend significant time studying.
  • Implementation programs are recommended for those who want deeper practical knowledge and wants the school to deeply control the quality of assimilation of this knowledge through the verification of real implementation projects. That being said, you need to be prepared to devote significant time to the implementation of these projects.

In terms of the value of diplomas, there is no difference between Academic and Implementation Mini-MBA, MBA, Executive MBA and DBA ... - If we are talking about a strong federal business school, then its diploma is appreciated by employers. At the same time, in order to be sure of the value of the diploma, it is recommended to choose programs that occupy high positions not only in national, but also in global global rankings ... Such business schools that offer MBAs and are listed both nationally and globally MBA ratings, in Russia as of 2019 there are only 4, one of them is EMAS (EMAS MBA Top-14 in Central and Eastern Europe, The best Masters and MBAs worldwide, 2019). Moreover, among Russian full-time MBA EMAS program takes 2nd place!

Semester 1

Semester 2

Semester 3

Semester 4

  • Module 13. Leadership

You are constantly faced with the need to lead, manage and influence people. This module focuses on the art and science of leadership and people leadership. Particular attention is paid to the competencies of the manager. We will look at effective leadership models and discuss influential leaders in various fields. Practical exercises will help you improve your decision-making and negotiation skills. To improve your persuasion skills, you will be placed in a situation in which you will have the opportunity to improve your speaking skills. This final human relations module is mainly based on practical exercises. Analysis and feedback from your classroom presentation to an audience is designed to help you improve your rhetoric, negotiation, and personal strategies for success.

  • Module 14. Strategic Business Planning

Recent events have shown that the only thing we know for sure about the future is that it is uncertain. This uncertainty can be broken down into two parts, which will form the basis of this module. First, we will look at "measurable uncertainty" with marketing strategy and tactical decisions, including pricing and investment analysis, which are applied in management accounting. Second, we will not stop there and go further, because we believe that the creative imagination of “unmeasurable uncertainty” is even more important for our future success. Questions will be discussed such as: "What compromise should be made regarding the short and long term when drawing up a strategic business plan?" As part of this module, you will also have the opportunity to develop and defend your strategic business plan, tailored to the current difficult economic situation.

  • Module 15. Learning experiences

A distinctive feature of this module is that its content is based on the wishes of the participants expressed during the two-year course of study. The module includes a business game on managing companies in knowledge-intensive industries and integrates the knowledge and experience gained during several previous modules of the program. You will be able to prove yourself by participating in a detailed examination of a successful role model - you will have to provide an analysis of the activities of a well-known company. As a rule, this module takes place abroad, so its specific content will depend on the venue. An example of a question that a manager will have to answer: "What important lessons can be learned from analyzing a model company and how to apply this knowledge in your day-to-day work?"

  • Project of implementation of changes "Leading Change"

The Leading Change project is primarily focused on developing conceptual thinking and skills. effective management changes in different areas such as strategy, human resources, business processes and corporate culture organizations.
It is based on an algorithm for finding and diagnosing a "problem" in an organization. Using causal analysis under the prism of various management tools, the team of participants develops and implements a coherent strategy to identify and solve the "problem" in response to any challenges of the organizational environment.

  • Leadership Development

Leadership is the ability to change the world with and with other people. A leader needs knowledge and skills. In order to lead others, you first need to learn to understand yourself. It is also very important to create your own leadership approach from the entire set of knowledge and skills and use it effectively at every moment of organizational development.

The leadership development program focuses on three blocks:

    • Learn to better understand yourself through individual coaching and creating a personal development contract.
    • Learn to better understand yourself and others through a variety of group tasks and training.
    • To provide program participants with theoretical models of modern leadership.
  • Executive MBA Dissertation

An important part of the program is the dissertation for the Executive MBA degree, work on which contributes to the development of students' deep understanding of the basics of management and critical thinking skills, and also increases the level of their analytical skills. The Executive MBA thesis builds on the knowledge gained from the modules, but expands and deepens them in part by systematizing the participants' work on collecting and analyzing data. The main requirement for graduate work of the Stockholm School of Economics is the presence of both theoretical and practical parts. Therefore, the topic of such work can be, for example, actual problem business faced own company participant or industry as a whole. Work on a dissertation begins in the first semester with the choice of a topic. Then, over the next semesters, the project develops, and the results of its development are discussed with the leader. Thus, the quality of work is constantly improving. At the end of the last semester, an Executive MBA thesis is defended before a panel of invited examiners who are not staff members of the Stockholm School of Economics.

  • Exams and graduation

The knowledge of program participants is systematically tested through assignments performed between modules and during modules, and special exams are taken at the end of each semester. The results of these exams and the Executive MBA thesis constitute the final marks at the end of the program. The program ends with a graduation ceremony, where all participants who have successfully completed the requirements are awarded an Executive Master of Business Administration diploma, confirming the Executive MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree.

Executive MBA (EMBA) Is a training program for business professionals with work experience - top managers and business owners. As a rule, students must have at least seven years of service.

The main feature of EMBA programs is modular training, which provides for offsite modules in other cities or countries. In addition, there is little theory and a lot of practice in education for leaders: students solve business cases (case studies), do project work, take part in trainings, master classes and business games, and attend interactive lectures.

The first EMBA programs appeared in the US and Europe about 20 years ago. Now they are very popular and are present in the line of programs of almost every major business school (with the exception of only a few of them, for example, Harvard business School, which fundamentally does not introduce this type of education, adhering to the classic format of daily education for two years).

In Russia, the first EMBA programs appeared in the early 2000s, immediately becoming popular. Almost every Russian business school has one or more EMBA programs in its portfolio, while in Moscow there are more than 40 of them.

Duration of study on the EMBA program

Like a regular MBA program, the Executive MBA can last from one to two years with varying degrees of intensity. Usually these are several modules that can take place in different cities or countries (sometimes there is also training on weekends).

Fully distance EMBA programs do not exist, as one of main advantages such a program is an opportunity to communicate with leaders of the business community in order to exchange knowledge and expand professional contacts. However, in between modules, remote learning is possible using modern technologies(lectures, teamwork and case studies can be held online).

Cost of EMBA programs

In Russia and abroad, the cost of EMBA programs is higher than that of MBA programs. As for Moscow, in the capital there is a wide range of prices for training in these programs, which depends on many factors: the inclusion in the price of expenses for modules abroad, educational literature, etc.

If we compare the prices for an EMBA in Moscow with the cost of education of this level abroad, then education for leaders at home turns out to be cheaper. The only exception, perhaps, is the EMBA program of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, which is published by Kommersant. Money ”was placed in 2014 in 7th place in the most expensive EMBA programs in the world.

RANEPA, MIRBIS, Russian Economic School, Moscow Business School or at MGIMO.

As for the cultural capital of Russia, an EMBA in St. Petersburg can be obtained, for example, at Stockholm School of Economics, one of the world's leading business schools with a triple crown of accreditations (EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB), as well as at High school management of St. Petersburg State University.

You can learn more about EMBA programs in Russia and abroad at the educational exhibition.

Why is an Executive MBA a good investment?

The Executive MBA (EMBA) remains one of the most profitable investments in one's own well-being: intensive development of leadership qualities, a broader strategic vision and practical skills that can be applied here and now.
